19.11.13 Chaos Continues at Athens Universitiesl

strike UoA NTUA

The situation at the University of Athens and the National Technical University of Athens

still remains unsettled.

The two historical institutions remain closed for the 11th consecutive week,

holding thousands of students and their families “hostage,”

due to the ongoing conflict between the administrative employees,

the Ministry of Education and the universities rectorate concerning

the suspension of the employees.

Yesterday, officials at UoA announced a new 48-hour strike for today

and tomorrow and for Thursday – Friday as well.

In the meantime the nine departments of NTUA are currently

under student occupation.

Administrators remain adamant stressing the fact that they will only speak with the Ministry of Education officials

if they withdraw the CMD concerning the suspension and launch a debate for the allocation of university staff.

The administrative employees, despite the warning of the Ministry of Education that anyone who refuses entrance to the students

and teaching staff will be arrested, blocked the main entrances of the universities and actually wouldn’t let a teacher and

the students go through. The refusal lead to small-scale arguments.

Meanwhile, the members of the Senate at the University of Athens handed their letters of resignation to the Dean Mr. Pelegrinis,

in an attempt to express their opposition in the matter of the administrative employees’ suspension.

According to Senate members the ranking tables were full of mistakes and so unevenly divided that some universities

would be left with no staff.

Meanwhile today, Konstantinos Arvanitopoulos, Minister of Education will once again try to legally attack the strikers,

to deem the strike illegal and abusive of power.
