04.11.13 General Strike in Greece on November 6

general strike Greece

On Wednesday November 6,  a general strike of public and private sectors

will take place for 24-hours and there is a possibility that protests will continue.

Public Servant’s Union (ADEDY) and General Confederation of Greek Labor (GSEE) declared

“The fight against austerity measures is our only hope,” noting that

“redundancy in the public and private sector and unprecedented

new tax measures are leading to the forfeiture of the dwelling. On top of it, the upcoming

new cuts in pensions, the labor relations overthrow,

in combination with the abolition of Sunday holiday are exacerbating social impasse.”

Moreover, state hospitals and the ambulance service will operate with skeleton staff due to the general strike called by the ADEDY and GSEE labor unions.

Health centers will also be affected as the healthcare workers’ union, POEDIN, has called on its members to gather outside the Health Ministry in central Athens from 10 a.m. to protest against austerity measures.

There will be no international flights from noon to three p.m. on Wednesday and public transport will be disrupted as workers join a 24-hour general strike.

Unlike other workers, the air traffic controllers will not stay away from their posts for 24 hours. However, they will walk off the job between noon and 3 p.m. This may cause delays and cancellations so passengers should contact with their airlines.

The Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO) will also join to the strike.
